I play the Eb alto sax. How do I transpose trumpet music to what I play?

What about clarinet music?
Piano?

if you play a c on alto sax you will have to play an f on a trumpet to produce the same sound, here are the transposing notes for both instruments.

trumpet alto sax

f c

f# or gb c# or db
g=                   d
g# or ab d# or eb
a e
Bb or a# f
b f# or gb
c g
c# or db g# or ab
d a
d# or eb Bb or a#
e b

I have just started to pick up the sax again, this time the alto after 40 years. How do I transpose piano music chords to reflect the alto. How many steps up or down

juke i would seriously recommend u help no1 else with transposing.
From alto to trumpet is..
G-C
G#-C#
A-D
Bb-Eb
B-E
C-F
C#-F#
D-G
Eb-G#
E-A
F-Bb
F#-B

Remember they don`t work if u go the oppisite way. For example, a trumpets G isn`t your C.

from sax to clarinet
Remember that G on the alto sax is the same fingering and same pitch as middle C on the clarinet- all the other notes can be worked out from that. Once you cross the break on the clarinet it takes a bit more thought, though

My way on going from Bb to Eb is to based on chords. I think ok, on my Tenor this is a D, then I remember 12 Bar bluessongs and the second bar is the scale with one more flat....so D in Bb would be a G on Eb.....make sense?

It helps me a lot, also, when you look at a song, just find a few root notes and then just go up or down the same distance as writeen on a page....

This is my weird non standard way of doing it but it helps.

Also, i`ve found a trick with Half diminished chords, just take the chord down a step and minor7 it....or just flat it five times, so a B Half diminished would have no sharps or flats, but an E half diminished would have a Bb....

I have weird ways of doing everything.....you should see how i handle diminished chords....wow...scary.

OK. An F# on the alto sax is the same as a B on the clarinet/cornet/trumpet/tenor sax which is the same as a C on the piano/flute/oboe/guitar/recorder.

I`m only 13 so sorry if this is wrong but it is what we were taught in band at school.

The only way to transpose is to learn how steps and space between the different keys.
