if money is an issue then a yamaha fits the bill, the intermeditate ones are pretty nice, though for a bit more you can get a pro that will last you

i agree..

you should get a yamaha.

but whatever you do, don`t get the jean baptiste.

those instruments don`t last very long.

i had one in junior high..

and it didn`t last very well.

jsut look at the major brands lower end horns. Like said, yamahas are the cheapest yet good quality, maybe look into keilwerth, they have a real nice lower end tone, and perhaps selmer usa, maybe olds.

Try Yamaha`s, Yanagisawa`s, Selmer`s and Keilwerth`s, and find out which one you like the best. Stay with a high quality horn or you will regret it in the long run.

I`m a senior in high school and just bought an alto sax. its a cannonball, and if youve never heard of it, check it out. itll be about $2,200 for the alto. i highly recommend trying one out b4 buying a yamaha. i say this b/c i have owned an intermediate yamaha for 5 years and after i played the cannonball, there was a huge difference. the cannonball blew the yamaha away. i actually played my buddy`s yamaha pro sax today in class, which was obviously alittle better than mine, but i still have to say the cannonball is an overall better sax. of course, everyone has their own opinion, so go try one!

Yeah i`ve tried my friend`s yamaha pro. we noticed that the pro feels alittle "larger" when playing it. so we compared the intermediate and and pro yamaha, and yeah the pro is actually alittle bigger. yes, it does play nicer than my intermediate (yeah i think its a yas 23), but its not the low end one with silver keys. its all gold. i did not notice an enormous difference between the intermediate and pro though, and thats why i chose not to spend the money on a pro yamaha that i didnt feel was a big step up. everyone has their own opinions b/c everyone is different, so the only thing i wanted you to really get out of this message is to go try different saxes. dont have this permanent image of yamaha in your head, and thats the best advice i can give, b/c you know how a yamaha plays, and there are many many other options out there. of course, buying a pro yamaha in the end might well be the right choice, especially if youve been happy with your intermediate yamaha so far. go out and compare!

Hi, if anyone is interested, I'm selling my sax on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-YAMAHA-ALTO-SAXOPHONE-YAS-275_W0QQitemZ7419214275QQcategoryZ16232QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
It is absolutely brand new, I have never played it before-its a Yamaha YAS 275, and I am looking to sell it for £500, which is an incredible saving for this horn. I am looking to sell it to a UK market, but if you are interested and from abroad, then contact me if you want: harry.thorrington@ntlworld.com ! Thanks

If you're trying to stay under $2,000 a yamaha yas475 is a pretty good intermediate horn. You aren't going to get a good pro horn in this price range, but these play pretty well. Whatever you do, stay away from cannonball no matter what the salesman in this thread says. They are awful, cheaply made instruments.

If you want a really high quality saxophone, you can also look for used Pro models. Or get an antique one. I did, and I will NEVER regret it. My saxophone is older than my grandmotherXD
