I have a Yamaha YTS 62. The thing plays so sharp I have to leave the mouthpiece dangling near the end of the cork and lift the neck out as far as it will go with the octave key still working to get it just NEAR being tuned. Is there something I can do to gt this fixed? new mouthpiece (i`m using the crap that came with it), new something-or-other? Get it adjusted somehow?

if you recently got the sax, take it back. Yamaha saxes are usually verry consistant, but every once in a while you get a stinker. if you have had the sax for a while, take it in to a local music shop and have them check it out.

No, i got this thing used when I was in 8th grade (soph in college now). I usually play alto and I never noticed back then `cause my ear couldn`t pick it up. After recently aquiring perfect pitch, I realize just how bad it`s always been.

If nothing can be done, whatever. I haven`t played it publicly since 8th grade.

heh, thatnks, but if I sold it i`d use the money for something else. I haven`t had the need for the tenor at all. It`s just that I have it and figured i`d do what can with it, kinda like a hobby, i guess.

lol, ok, enugh being an ass for me, at least for the moment. I think you are confusing haveing perfect pitch, with being able to find the center of pitch.

anyway play to a tuner to make sure. then if you find the problem accutally exsists, have new pads put on, as they are pretty old now and are probably leaking.

I actually know personally someone who was able to develop it, you aren`t actually born with it, you acquire it shortly after...this person just listened to a perfect A everyday for a year and then one day just got it.

lol dude u got the right idea man. i used to have this problem when i was a beginner. i out grew my yamah 4c and my tone would just waver. usually sharp. i would reccommmend a meyer if ur a new player. if u use it with the right reeds it can be used to both jazz and concert music

okay I threw in the perfect pitch thing because I had to brag about because YES you can develop it, contrary to popular belief. I`ve tuned it with a tuner and it`s not even close until i pull everything out as far as it would go. I`ve been playing for 10 or so years, so i`m thinkin` the horn is just wonky.. yes, I said wonky.

here is what I think you should do:

go to a local music shop and tell them to look it over for any problems, tell them to call you with what they think is wrong. and if its anything other than worn out pads and springs, have them fix the problem.

if that doesnt fix it, or they say it is just pads/springs etc have it overhauled, after as long as you have had your sax they tend to get a bit sloppy.

better than haveing them replace the pads one by one when they go bad if you have the $$$ for the overhaul. but they tend to run in the hundreds. either way have it checked out at a local music shop

checked on tenor prices for a complete overhaul (never played one, thus never worryed about the price before), should run you $400 - $500. so check the pads, see if there is any drying, any deposits, or any discolloration, if not its probably a pad leak
