Is it really possible to march with bari? My band director doesnt allow any marching baris and from personal experience i wouldnt either! But even with a harness, i find it very hard. And also do you hold it straight out in front of you or to the side while marching? I just find it a little puzzling.....

I think it would be uncomfortable marching with any sax; there're just so oddly shaped. OK, maybe not a soprano sax, but an alto, tenor, bari, etc...

MArching with any instrument is a challange in itself. Too much co ordination involved. But with a Bari ... that would be damn uncomfortable. I find it hard marching with the Alto!

I think marching with a bass clarinet would be hard, too...

You march with a bari at your side, not out infront of you and you HAVE to use a harness instead of a neck strap or else you'll seriously hurt yourself.
alto saxes arent hard to march with but i find tenors bells hit on your upper leg when marching and it juggles around a lot so you have to hold it with two hand out in front of you.
this comes from a former cadet who did this all last summer.

I march bass clarinet, and it's not really that bad, they're lighter than tenor saxes. but anyway, a friend of mine marches bari, he uses a harness, but he gets along just fine.

Certain instruments just arent made for marching> The bari sax is just too big and the bass clarinet is very hard to carry while playing.

I march Bari Sax for my High School Band, and I don't find it too hard. I use a harness and march with the saxophone to the side. The bell really doesn't get in your way while marching, if you hold a bit off of your side, so the saxophone isn't hitting your legs. The only annoying bit is the harness itself, because the slide on the strap will occasionally fall and lower the mouthpiece, although that may be just be my harness.

It is possible to march with a Bari Sax. I have a friend who does. Its very hard because the intrument is hevay but it does make a good addition to the bass instruments. I believe that you would have to use a body strap in order to march with it but my friend marches with a regular strap.

In my band we have 2 marching Bari's and neither use a harness just a good neck strap...we have 2 marching bass clarinets we also have a marching contrabass clarinet. None of them complain at all about the weight or of their necks hurting... but I guess every band director is different ours won't march Sousaphones or Trombones and we always get comments on that.

Yeah I've seen it i march alto and its not that difficult.... i want to march bari but it will literally eat me.... the tenor eats me.... if i marched bari half of it wouldnt be there because i would drag it on the ground because i am so short. My band director doesn't let anyone march it because he thinks there going to to get spina bifida if they do.

well i march bari and i don't find it hard. and i use a harness. some people think i'm crazy to march that thing since i'm a girl and i'm little in comparison to other people. but yeah. i find it easy. i just have to move it a little to the side so it wont hit my leg.

...marching contrabass clarinet? that's ridiculous. i'd like to see a picture of that. wow.

bass clarinets and bari saxes are an interesting marching thing. really, they arent the best marching instruments, and (particularly bass clarinet more than bari) aren't really needed in that setting if you have a good low-brass section. (i hate to say this, becuase i would love to march bass clarinet.) so really, it depends on the situation. if they add positively to the overall sound, great, but it theyre hidden by a competent trombone/baritone/tuba section, might as well not bother and keep the horns in good shape for concert season.
