hi everyone...just wana ask some of your opinion regarding solo lines "adlib" in some music. how do you do it? how to make great lines? i was once asked by my team to play the adlib. all i did was playing the scale to which key we are in to. does anyone could give some ideas? thanks a lot.

I`m an alto saxophone player in a middle school band. This might sound stupid but what does adlib mean? Does it mean just to make up stuff? I`ve seen it in jazz music and classical solos. I thought that only jazz musicions improvised. Thanks! :0

hey,

Yes playing the chords is a good way if your a beginner..and probably very good. I personally however have kinda stopped playing the chords, well...sorta, play by feel for teh notes. That`ll come after a while, with each key, you can stick straight to the chord notes to be safe...but experiment, if you hit a "bad" note (even though there aren`t any) don`t go back to it.

most important part...RHYTHEMS!!!...buy a pattern book...if you can memorize a couple patters and move em around..you`re set

This might be a useful tip:

I think a great way to start improvising is to take the melody of a song and play around it. this way you`ll never lose track of where you are in the tune and you will automaticcaly lower the risk of playing `odd` notes, simply because the melody is correct, right?

I hope this information is of any use.

Scales are, in my opinion, very important, if not the most important part of soloing. LEARN ALL THE MAJOR, MINOR, 7TH, DIM, AG, SUS, ETC...AND ALL THEIR MODES!!!!! Though this takes LOTS of time, I can`t stress this enough. When you improvise, or adlib as you call it, there are two basic ways to go about it. You can either follow the chord changes, or find the root note of the song, and just play within that scale. Arrpegios, or playing the notes of a chord in succession, is also very helpful while soloing.
For example, if your soloing in the key of C Major (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) a usful arrpegio would be from C to E to G to B ( I, III, V, VII).
Although the notes are what primarily make up a solo, the techniques used are also very important. Some include bending, growling, vibrato, tremello (exagerated vibrato), harmonics, dynamics, and anything else you can think of.

scales and arpegios are estrectaly usfull for that one that has not talent at all. learning sons in your memory or by ear will assure you to have all armonies in the proper order and progresivaly tranformed will arrive to a new construction of a new poin of vew over the original melody trying to help it to improved without spolied whit high respect with the autor. Sorry for my english.
