Hi, I am hoping to take up the saxophone soon and am already a keen flautist (amongst other things) and was wondering which type of saxophone was most suitable for a beginner? Also, how much would a student sax cost? Thank you

I would say probably the alto. It depends though. Some people insist that you have to start with an alto and work your way down or up, but some say otherwise. I started on a Baritone, I've tried an alto once but that's it. Baritone was easy for me but the size was hard to deal with considering that I was eleven at the time. If you are a smaller person than you probably shouldn't go lower than the tenor, unless if you're like my skinny eleven-year-old self, insisting to play the lowest I could manage. To sum it up, I'd go with alto if you want the learning to be the smoothest, soprano if you like high sounds and tenor or baritone if can manage if you like deeper sounds.
