I am a 14 year old Australian who has been playing the Clarinet for 2 years. However, I have always dreamed of learning the soprano sax.
I have scoured the internet for information on this instrument. Through my efforts, I have found many people saying that while it looks smaller and more managable, it is more difficult than the tenor or alto sax. I cannot find a reason as to why this is so. If anyone can shed some light on this, please leave a link to a page or reply by yourself.
Also, I am having trouble finding a reputable brand of Soprano Sax to buy. Does anyone know a brand available in Melbourne, Australia that is known to produce reliable, quality student Saxes?

Thanks for all your help,
Malana

Hi my name is William Neal, and I have been playing the saxophone for 3 years (since I was 10) and the soprano is more difficult than the tenor or alto by far . Its because of a tighter embouchure, and more breath control to sustain notes. But then its still really cool. If you have any more questions you can E-mail me at music_is_art@hotmail.com

I actually went from the flute straight to soprano sax, and I think that for me it`s not too difficult, mainly because I didn`t start on alto or tenor, but I have tried tenor and alto and soprano is very clearly much harder to learn, due to tighter embouchre (sp?) and breath control, as William mentioned. Although harder, I think it`s much cooler, but is also harder to get good on. I had a lot of intonation problems when I started, but now I`m perfectly tuned and am playing very advanced things that a 3 year alto would be playing.

I too started on clarinet (actualy I still play the clarinet). Today, in fact, (today is christmas) I got a Soprano Sax!!!!!!
This was done in order to prevent me from playing too much jazz clarinet (it won`t work). I need some music and finger charts (I got most of it down, because I already play tenor sax). Music is hard to find; please help.
Thank You.
