There are two approaches here - the "scare you senseless approach", or the "best choice you`ll ever make" approach.
Personally, I think that picking up the sax when I was a kid was the best choice in life I`ve ever made. I love playing my sax. I love practicing for countless hours all of the insane exercises that sax players work on. I love listening to the great sax players and transcribing their solos, learning licks, patterns and techniques in all keys. I love filing my reeds. Are you willing and able to go to any lengths for your love of the sax? If not, that`s o.k. You`ll still have fun. But beware - it sucks you in.

excellent reply... lol
I`ve been playing for 12 years now.
I believe the sax is the only passion I`ve held on
to more than a couple years.
I play the alto and soprano, good luck!

I play the alto sax and I think it`s brill! You can have so much fun and the sound is great!!!!!! Once you take hold of a sax u will not want 2 put it down! When u play a sax u can really get into the music unlike with any other instrument! No matter what you do with it swing it, jazz it e.t.c. it still sounds great! Hope my views help

Yes, i would suggest after a year or two, start on tenor....you can only go so far on alto....there`s no limit to alto.

hey, i`m in the eighth grade, and when i started in fifth i thought it would be hard, and it`s harder if you`ve played a different instrument, but if you are starting out scratch, it`s easier, simply cuz if you played, like, the flute first, you were used to forming your mouth that way... but yeah... umm, of course there`s the beginner problems, but after a while it`s A LOT easier, and my director even said after a while that it is one of the easiest instruments, which did not make me feel better! but oh well... but go ahead! i say try it!! it`s a fun instrument once you learn the main rules about it!! HAVE FUN!!!

That is very true, that`s what i did and then i came back to clarinet, after learning and progressing in sax, 2 years later.

I played clarinet before saxophone as well. I have to disagree with whoever said playing a different instrument before playing sax would be much harder. Although I did not start on sax, I can say that when I got my saxophone, I basically learned how to play it in a day and was able to ace my check off the following day. So even though others will disagree with me, I agree with my teacher: saxophone is made to be easy.

Actually you`re quite right. Adolf Sax designed the Saxophone for clarinet players to learn for orchestras and military bands.

Saxophone is extremely easy to START but it can get mighty difficult, Trumpet improvisation doesn`t take a whole lot to sound decent, Sax does.

Sax i would say has one of the hardest mastering levels because of the level everyone else plays at.
