I began to take lessons and stuff recently, but I've always looooved singing. So, I've been singing for a little while now. The thing is, I can sing in front of certain people without any problem at all, and we all agree that I have a pretty good voice; but for some reason, when I sing in front of my coach my throat closes and comes out is h o r r i b l e. I overcame my fear of singing a while ago, but my throat still closes whenever I try to sing in front of him. My range decreases and my voice sounds like a 3 year-old's, but as soon as I get out of there my singing voice goes back to normal. What the hell is wrong with me?!?!

Like, the idea of singing in front of him does not make me nervous anymore, it's rather the fact that I know my throat will close and I will !****! up that really messes with me. I reaaaally want to show my potential and shine, my one dream is to sing and be a star... but I'm very worried that this might not ever go away and I'm not gonna be able to do it

Please, please help me.

Hi,
I just have the same problem... and I don't want to change my coach as she is a perfect singer.
Last year I had an attempt to overcome it. I just MADE myself sing very LOUDLY every time I sang with my coach. And this helped. Then I caught a cold... I gave up singing just for two weeks... but that was enough to turn it all back...

This is very common. The idea that it's sing in front of your friends, family, boyfriend and girlfriend, but when singing in front of a "vocal coach", someone who KNOWS good singing, you feel your throat closing.

Totally understandable, but I would wonder what the vocal coach is doing to encourage you to relax. Are they accommodating and understanding where this issue is coming from, or are they just trying to roll over it? Singing is just as much mental as physical and it's important for the coach to understand that you are dealing with this.

Additionally, what exercises are you working on together? There are lots of exercises designed to release throat tension that could be used to help free you up. Such as a lip trill or sirens.

Hey y'all, here's a video with some exercises that are designed to release throat tension.
Have you done any of these?

To MattRamsey: My coach tells me that the problem originates from me being nervous and stuff, but that I'll get over it in time, that I just need to gain control over my throat. So he's kind of rolling over it. I'm desperate, though, whenever I attempt to sing a high note he just tells me to sing it, but I can't, no matter how hard I try.

We don't do exercises at all. I just vocalize at the beginning of the class and that is it.

Also, thanks for the replies, I'll try everything! I don't feel so alone in this anymore, lol.

Vocal exercises are one of the most reliable ways of hitting high notes without strain. Songs are WAAAYYY more challenging. Rolling over your nervousness is counterproductive since he/she is not giving you the tools you need to succeed in the first place.

At the studio, we spend about half to 2/3 of a lesson on vocal exercises and then go to the song. If you aren't given vocal exercises, how can you be expected to do it in a song?
Hope the video I attached gives you something to work with.

Hello everyone, I'm a new member here, I' m from Italy, this is my passion and forgive me for my not so good english. I'm here for to improve it and to know and learn more about the art of singing.
Could it be possible the problem is a problem of relaxation connected to breathing?
