I don't really know if this is the right forum or not... But I realy need some help.

Ok. So, I play guitar. And I ecided, a while back, to learn to read sheet music. I know almost everything there is to know about it, except for one thing. That thing is, On chords such as "A13"

[it goes like this, in case you dont know]

---5---
---8---
---7---
---5---
---0---
-------

So it is on the fifth fret... And I'm wondering how to specify, on the sheet music, that it begins on the fifth fret. Do I use some sort of symbol or use leger lines or what? Oh, And also, for standard chords, such as A, for example, do i write it on the Original Staff, or do I use leger lines in situations such as that as well? Thanks. I hope I made sense...

Conventional guitar notation doesn't specify frets, but it does specify strings on occasion, when this is considered appropriate (especially in instructional music), and a given note on a given string can be played on one fret only. You can trust the player to figure out what fret that must be. The strings are specified by numeral, 1 for the high E string, 2 for the B string, and so on. String numerals must be circled to distinguish them from left-hand fingering numerals.

Right-hand fingering numerals use letters: p for thumb, i for index finger, m for middle finger, and a for ring finger.

Bear in mind that the guitar is written an octave higher than concert pitch, which necessarily means leger lines for the higher notes. To avoid excessive leger lines use the 8va sign.

The term sheet music by the way, properly refers to music for a single piece in contradistinction to a collection of pieces, which is called a folio. The proper term to use when you mean notated music in general is simply music.

The most common voicing for an A13 chord is (low to high) A G C# F#, which would commonly played without open strings: 5-x-5-6-7-x, fingered 1,2,3,4. This involves no barre, and, as I've pointed out already, it is superfluous to specify frets when notated. If you like, you can specify left hand fingering (put Arabic numerals near noteheads) and strings (put circled Arabic numerals near
noteheads), but this would normally be done only for instructional purposes.
