My parents have finally, after countless hours of pleading, agreed to buy me a horn. xDDDD Recently I found a person selling two different horns. Both are Hans Hoyer but one is a 4802 while the other is a DK121. I adore playing on both horns and I'm trying to decide on either one.

The 4802 is a very seasoned horn, unlacguered, Kruspe wrap. String linkage. Beautiful dark tone with very good upper and lower registers. 3.5k.

The DK121 is a relatively new horn, only 1+ year old. Lacquered Geyer wrap. Mechanical linkage. Plays extremely well and smooth. Tone is definitely more on the bright side. 6.5k (My currency is way smaller than USD, so just use the price as a percentage comparison )

The horn i'm currently playing on is a Ricco Kuhn W293. Very similar to the DK121.

I usually play upper horn in wind bands that frequently play orchestra transcriptions.

All things considered, which would be a better choice?

I can adjust to different horns no problem (I once had to use 5 different horns each for 2 weeks >< I'm just trying to decide whether the 6.5k horn is worth the extra 3k or not.

My personal choice would be the 4802. I like the older horns and with a good well developed embouchre the tone quality is more enhanced in the older horns.

As far has which will last longer do not assume it will be the younger horn. It depends how much and how oftne you actually play and how often you oil your horn. The 4802 will carry the tone better. And if anything wears out things can be rebuilt. My primary horn is from 1962 and everyone who plays it loves it. I did have the valves rebuilt in 1980 and it was a lot less than buying a new horn.

I bought the 4802 recently and your post just made me feel even more assured in my decision. Thanks
