Hi,

I recently purchased a used Conn 6D. Based on the serial number the horn was built in 1980. I was told that the horn was purchased from a music store that was going out of business and that this was a demo horn that hadn't been played much. There is very little wear on the horn.

Just out of curiosity I decided to measure the bell and it measured out at 12.25". I know that the current 6Ds have a 12" bell and the 8Ds have a 12.25" bell. Based on the measurement I have several questions.

1) Did I measure correctly? I simply measured directly across the bell from rim to rim. Is this correct?

2) If the measurement is correct, then has there ever been much variation in the design of the 6D which would have included a larger bell flare?

3) If the 6D was never made with the 12.25" bell then did I get ripped off with a very good fake?

Thanks in advance! This is a great forum!

You probably did not get ripped-off by a fake.
I don't suppose you can get me a picture of the horn.

Send me a PM and I will give you my personal email if you can send a picture.
Often people sell 28D's thinking they are 6D's.
And that could be to your benefit.

Texashorn and I communicated.
We found most Conn 6D's have had 12.25" bells.
My 1959 does. And we found actual Conn literature from the 50's and on which describes the instruments as 12 and 1/4 inch bells.
So this change to the 12 inch bell, is probably them making the 6D a student horn. AS it used to be the symphonic horn for a long time.
