I've been asked to join a small group of musicians to play in parties and such. The main problem is that that sort of band (which is very common over here), doesn't use French horns. The people who are trying to assemble it have suggested that I buy one of those cheap plastic instruments and join them. I'd love to. Having had a private tutor, and not gone to the conservatory, I feel a bit isolated in the town's musical scene, and I'd love to be able to socialise more.

If I leave aside the trumpet, which doesn't appeal too much to me, that leaves trombone, tuba or epiphonium (all of which are very welcome in this type of bands). Apart from personal taste (and I find it hard to make a decision), which one would you recommend as the easiest one for switching from the French horn to, or as the less harmful to my embouchure? Do you think an epiphonium could replace a tuba when playing on the street?

And, just in case, would I be able to play the part of the epiphonium with my French horn?

I was always taught that horn players should never play any other brass instrument. Never!

JohnK1960, do you mean French horn players, or brass players in general? Everyone over here seems to be able to play other instruments apart from their main one (I'm talking about brass all the time).

Just French Horn players. I went through a nightmare back in school when I began High School. My High School was all about Marching Band and the director insisted I play Trumpet or some other brass instrument for marching season. I had been told by both my former Middle school band director and both my former and current horn teachers to never, ever play any other brass instrument if you were serious about the horn. I took that so seriously that I quit band in High School. I ended up being sent to regionals and all state by the school choir director. That really opened a can of worms up.

Stop and think about this. It takes years to develop a beautiful dark tone on the horn. Years of developing the muscles needed for an instrument with a tiny mouthpiece that is placed two thirds on the upper lip. No other brass instrument has such a mouthpiece. After all that work why would you risk developing a set of muscles that will work in opposition to your horn embouchure?

Thanks a lot for your detailed explanation and for having warned me about a mistake I was going to make. I see every brass player around here switching instruments like crazy, but then none of them plays the French horn. I thought I could do the same.

I already have a beautiful tone with my horn (I think), and since that's my strong point (quickness being my weakest point) I wouldn't like to spoil it.

Maybe I should persuade these people that I can play the euphonium part with the horn. Can I?

(Whatever made me write "epiphonium" in the tread subject!?)

You are most welcome. I don't see why you couldn't transpose those parts from B flat to F and play them on low horn.
