emo is a much maligned and misunderstood term for expressive, melodic, and poetic punk rock...

it stems from the early 1980s I think. today it is different from what it was. indy is partly a product of emo.

How in this world can you diss punk? Please bands like the clash and the sex pistols are really good. Although they will never be as good as led Zeppelin or Metallica.

indie's not a product of emo... emo's a product of indie. it started out in the 80's as emotive hardcore. today it stands for "emotional." and cartman... emo is pretty. hawthorne heights is not emo. fall out boy is not emo. try listening to a little jimmy eat world. appleseed cast...

This may be alittle late but.... Emo/Emocore, is short for emotive hardcore. It originated from punk rock in the 1980's. It was started by the bands Rites of Spring and Fugazi. Their lyrics /were/ known to be slightly poetic(poetic by language Art standards), and played with almost uncontrolable(sp?) energy. Today's emo is a mixture of pop and indie. Almost a completly different genre.

The reason why so many modern day emo bands are depressing is because they misunderstood the meaning of "poetic". They fail to understand that "poetry" doesn't mean depression and sadness, or that poetry CAN accually be happy or humorous. They also don't realise that "my heart bleeds, I hate my life, and My life is tougher than your's" is not poetry; but a pityholic cry for attention and endorsment(sp?).

I'm not much of a fan of emo from either generation, but I thought I'd inform people about what it was/is.

Note: Jimmy Eat World falls under the category of modern emo. They're about the same as Good Charlotte. And I can't stand listening to them.
