punk sucks in general...even the so called great punk bands like rancid and nofx....i mean, a song called "timmy the turtle"? and you people actually buy this crap? these are nofx lyrics

timmy the turtle is out of his shell
timmy the turtle is givin them hell

now im a fan of heavier darker music such as tool deftones radiohead pink floyd NIN and so on, but this timmy the turtle song was the first and last NOFX song i ever listened too and i was nearly insulted. and most of you punk rockers consider this band to be great....how is that?

umm... ok... so you don`t like timmy the turtle... f.y.i hun, timmy the turtke is not their only song... they have extremely deep lyrics they just throw in timmy the turtle for fun... ii`m not really that big of a fan of nofx, but i just thought i`d let ya know that your being really unfair by listening to one song and saying they suck... which they kinda do but oh well... some of their songs are really good. they just happen to not be in my top ten... but i definitly have a lot of respect for them...

I know by saying this I probably sound like every other kid hating on mainstream but I really don`t understand how a band like Sum 41 can be called punk. Punk... at least I think.. is stuff like the clash, the sex pistols, misfits... stuff like that. But at the same time... can true punk be thrown in a catagory? Can it all be grouped together? Isn`t good music what stands out, what fills your soul with so much awe that you can feel your body moving, your eyes widening, and your heart racing without you even knowing it? So is it fair to these bands to be all bundled together and labeled, which is exactly what so many of them sing against? Some of these kids annoy me, because they think if they wear dickies, a pair of converse, and a clash patch on their back pack, and are covered with metal then they are punk. But again... that is conforming to a fashion, is it not? and isn`t truly being a punk being uncomformist? doing your own thing regardless of what is "popular"? <snip>. You get all worried about what is in and what isn`t that you lose sense of your true self and frankly it annoys me . Sorry I didn`t mean to lecture I just wanted to get all this out of my system. Anyways I gotta fly talk to you people later

i agree w/alot of stuff you guys are saying, mostly the whole punk as an attitude thing. but you gotta give people a break, i`m sure most of us were posers at one point in time, i know i was. just cuz you like stuff like blink182 doesn`t mean you ain`t punk, you have to know what you personally like, and you have to find the REAL punk music in your own time, (not saying blinks not punk, i don`t really have an opinion, don`t listen to em)& i totally agree w/not LEARNING how to punk, its not just clothes and loud music, its being different
thanx for your time and cooperation!

Oi! Yep, Different! That`s what it all about! But nowadays a lot of people try to but they just form a group of `different`s. Because it`s very hard. For ex. you put on a ripped purple jacket thinkin it`s the only and you are different, but across the street another person is doing the same thing!!1 hope you got my point. eh! Rotten.. you guys look at him. he is an example of punk!!!

Alright I won`t go into another lecture but I have to agree with whatshisface and that if you try to be different... you completely miss the point. Its about being you and knowing who you are and being ok with the fact that some people just aren`t like other people... it means that you want a further understanding of how people are, but moreso of how you yourself are, what I am saying is that its can`t be a fad or a "scene" or whatever the hell people are trying to make "punk" its just you, your music, and expressing yourself in different ways.

i wouldnt say all rock is dead to bring up an old topic not all kinds of rock have sold out as you guyz say think death metal and that genres of music including death/black/grind/gore/doom and that sort of thing that hasnt sold out cuz in that u cant sell out cuz they make no money theyre cds are sold in small independent metal shops its basically underground music and this thing about sellin out what if they r a band that does music becuz they love music and they just happen to be really big and sell a lot and becum rich what then just becuz they became successsful they suck now?so the theory is to be good u have to not be successful?like me i am in a band for the f**k of it and to have fun itd be cool if i got rich off it but id still love the music and play and record albums cuz its fun they money is just something that came off it like korn they are hella good sure they have a lot of money now but they still havent just made generic music u can tell almost every album has something new like on untouchables it wasnt all that good cuz it didnt have too much uniqueness but they didnt sell out cuz they just tried something new cuz theyre new album is f**kin bad@ss its got something new the thing they tried was emphasizing the bass and it sounds great and it was generic soundin

Hey, guys! Sometimes you tell Xtremely smart things. I mean it`s the real point. You are completely right.
But i am still of opinion that a person should listen to music whatever he/she likes. don`t matter if it died long ago. no matter if it no longer popular and stylish..
As to originality, the topic that was set up far away.. i`d say the best way to gain it - to say f**k to everyone lse and live your own life. Pretty lonely, on the other hand you dont depend on anyone.. Freedom and Independence - those are the main things we should remember about. it`s necessary for us and for others. it works also in situations not concerning music just plain relationship. We forget about independance and people grow tired of us. Or we forget to give th others freedom and they run away..........
Ah, Sorry, eveyone, that was just a depressing depressed little girl full of sorrow and dissappointment...............

how d`you describe punk music? The whole idea of it is to give people something a little different, something away from the over-produced mainstream, so how can it be catagorised?
The thing is it`s very difficult to discover what might be described as `real`punk without first going through punk-pop music.
Personally i have no problem with this stuff. If people enjoy this music and want to listen to bands like blink 182 or sum41 then why shouldn` they? And if the musicians themselves can make a living this way by doing something they love, then who are we to criticise?
Listen to what you like, and don`t worry about the catagories. It`s very sad when people get tied down to one genre.

For those among you looking for proof that punk still exists, try talking to the people at punkandjunk.com . They are punk obsessed, you get some good tips on what bands are in the underground, and as long as you aren`t easily offended then you might like the place (one warning though, you will get majorly insulted in the forum. it`s a fact, so don`t go there if you can`t hack it). They also go into stuff like religion and hc punk, straight-edge beliefs, and loadsa political stuff.

as for the bands

good: rancid, nofx, less than jake (more ska really, but oh well), [spunge], farsse (-1s, they won`t let it be spelt the right way here), drop-kick murphy`s, jeff buckley, offspring(on occasion), greenday.

bad(in my opinion): blink182, sex pistols (yes, i know they are definitive punk, but i still can`t stand them).

i guess everyone has their own definition of "punk". some think it`s a fashion. some people just argue back and forth between the ramones, blink 182, and avril lavigne. i guess there really isn`t a definition for punk, just what you want it to be.

I was thinking the other day about "punk" and what it means...when I came to this conclusion..punk must be dead. You see... for being the life style with no rules or regulations, of escaping from conformity, and living for the music.. there sure does seem to be a lot of "standards" for who and what is "punk"

uh huh...    18:58 on Tuesday, March 16, 2004
