I'll go with U2 and Led Zeppelin. I'm a drummer and thats who I focus on so if I focus on John Bonham and then Phil Rudd i would much prefer to listen to Bonzo. Also have you ever tried covering a Led Zeppelin song? It's pretty hard and takes a long time, the timing and the uniquness of their music is just crazy. I never really got into Sabbath that much and U2 have made it big time and i will never grow sick of listening to an album of theirs.

So here is an unbiased view... more of an observation


All bands do NOT go back to The Beatles... First there were the blues. Blues artists such as Charlie Patton, Son House, Lonnie Johnson, Howlin' Wolf etc. Then rock 'n roll started to take over and people such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis started to come around. People then started to really pay attention to the guitar as this music was mainstream unlike the blues. Over in Britain their were artists such as Joni Mitchell and Bert Jansch/John Renbourn who were making the folk guitar popular. When blues artists came over to the UK then the magic that most you people are talking about started to happen. The Beatles came around and introduced the 'band'. Now we think of a band as a guitarist, vocalist, bassist, and drummer. The Beatles really got that idea going. Using that format musicians started to hear the guitar and legends such as Elvis.

These are the guitar generation legends. The teenagers were all listening to Rock 'n Roll and started to take the guitar a little bit farther in soloing etc. Eric Clapton, as well as others, brought in Robert Johnson which then and ONLY then did he start he journey as one of the single most influencial artists of all time. Clapton had these extended solos and Hendrix had this distorted heavy sound... then came Zeppelin. They took everything and everyone have have mentioned and brought it to their own. They took the heavy sound 3 times farther and yet they still were a 'complete' blues band. They also had the tradition of the folk guitar which brought even more people in.

A quote from Robert Plant says " I still love bands like Fairport Convention. The Zeppelin is really the only heavy band I like." From the heavy sound though came the 70's and in turn the 80's. Really, Led Zeppelin were the last hugely influential band.


Now yes I know there are some people I missed and many important people since Zeppelin but, and not in opinion, The Beatles created the format for a 'rock' band. Clapton introduced heavy drums, long solo, and in-sync bass and guitar. Hendrix introduced the distorted guitar and a heavy sound. Zeppelin took it all and more in one package. They are the SINGLE most influencial but they would be no where without the blues/folk/rock'nroll legends.

That said, virtually all western music were influenced by these 4 bands. The others are imitations of their work and very little more.

(Doesn't mean they aren't amazing. I mean, they were all interpretations of other bands to lol but that's the way it goes)

zep sabbath and ac/dc rock. u2 quite frankly does not. it's not fair for one hard rockin zep to be stuck with some lame band against 2 other hard rockers.

Can we make that Led Zeppelin + Black Sabbath vs. U2 + AC/DC?

That way we can call is amazing rock bands vs. the bands made up of letters. U2 and AC/DC are good, don't get me wrong, but they just aren't in the same league yet.

Zeppelin is so much better than AC/DC, Sabbath, AND U2 combined that this contest really just isn't fair. I mean it still wouldn't be fair even if it was "Led Zeppelin vs. Every single other band". I mean, common. It's Zeppelin.
