Guitar-
I will go along with the first guy except perhaps swap Knoppfler out for Beck (no disrespect intended for Mark but..Jeff Frickin Beck!..ok?). Honorable mentions (Zappa, Vai the stunt guitarist, Satriani (Vai`s teacher) and Malmsteen (the ego) also love the originality of Gilmore who is sooo under rated!).

Bass-
I would also throw Geezer Butler in for Bass consideration along with Claypool, Deacon, Entwistle..Honorable to Cliff Burton

Drums-
Technically, Peart all the way..but for pounding out a thundering & interesting beat for 30 minutes without a single break-Bonzo (If it moves..smash it..)
For explosive riffs..Keith Moon.

Vocals..Mercury..in a class by himself. Plant is the quintissential Rock God though.

3 Bands I`d like to see

Top Band-for Flat out rockin`

Hendrix
Butler
Bonzo
Plant

Technically Enhanced Droids on roids
Malmsteen
Peart
Mercury
Claypool

Down & Dirty Boogie
John Deacon
Ian Gilliam
Clapton
Moon

There are definitely many greats in each categories. I`m looking at it from a rock `n` roll view.

Guitarists - Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Brian May

Bassists - Flea, Les Claypool, John Deacon, Nikki Sixx

Drummers - Neil Peart, Alex Van Halen, John Bonham

After reading some of the previous entries, I feel that no one should ever slander Neil Peart. what?! needs to shut the f!@# up. Longstreth did have talent. But his type of music sucked. That gothic satanic crap sucked ass. Listen to some classic rock. Even some `80s hair metal would do you some good (people please don`t hate me for that comment). I have seen some pretty good lists. But never hate on someone for liking the best.

Vocalist: David Lee Roth (Van Halen) (Hands down best on stage performer) or maybe Roger Daltry (The Whoe)

Guitarist: Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen), Joe Satriani, Randy Rhodes (Ozzy Osbourne..HOWEVER, Yngwie Malmsteen (Rising Force) plays the fastest guitar I`ve ever seen. No doubt why they call him `The King of Shred`

Bassist: Geddy Lee (Rush), Flead (Chili Peppers), and Mike Dirnt (Green Day)

Drummers: John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Keith Moon (The Who), Neil Peart (Rush), and Travis Barker (Blink 182)

Now I know Blink 182 fits NOWHERE with those bands..but Travis is an amazing drummer.

I`m gonna go out on a limb...I like my music "current", melodic and crunchy, so here you go....

VOCALS: Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave)

GUITARS: Jerry Cantrell (AIC) and Andy LaRoque (King Diamond...listen to the "Abigail" or "Them" albums and you will see why...incredible solos)

BASS: Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)...Les Claypool is a good choice as well

DRUMS: Dave Lombardo (Slayer)...the dudes from Tool and Dream Theatre can play too

talk about the ultimate melodic/death/doom/thrash metal band...hehe

BTW... "Lamb of God" kicks ass if you like good home-cooked thrash like me
